One of the big movie releases coming later this year is the sequel to iconic sci-fi flick Blade Runner. The movie that inspired countless others will be returning as Blade Runner 2049 this October. Later this month however, fans will be able to dive into a virtual reality (VR) experience based on the upcoming film, with a limited time showcase over the San Diego Comic-Con weekend.
The experience was originally teased during the Oculus Connect 3 (OC3) keynote by Yelena Rachitsky, Creative Producer at Oculus last year. Visitors will need to head to the heart of San Diego’s famed Gaslamp Quarter, where Blade Runner 2049 Experience will replicate the movie’s setting, complete with the unique sights, sounds and atmosphere of Los Angeles, circa 2049, presented by Alcon Entertainment and Johnnie Walker.
Attendees will enter through a gallery of art from Blade Runner 2049 before donning an Oculus Rift. The VR experience will then immerse them in the world of the film, after which they’ll walk into a neon-lit Los Angeles street scene, where they should be prepared to experience what the potential future holds, including impromptu tests to determine if they are humans or replicants.
There will also be several other unique elements to the whole setup. The actual Spinner from the new film will be on display, along with other vehicles featured in the film. So will costumes worn by the stars of Blade Runner 2049 and actors dressed in wardrobe from the film will be amongst the crowd. Additionally, as Johnnie Walker is part of the promotion, fans will get an exclusive peek of the limited-edition Johnnie Walker Black Label The Director’s Cut bottle, inspired by the original, elusive prop from the first film, with guests 21 and over also getting the chance to enjoy a whisky tasting experience.
The Blade Runner 2049 Experience is located across the street from the Comic-Con convention center so you won’t need an event badge to enter. It’ll run from from 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st; 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday 22nd; and 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday 23rd July.
