Design In VR, Print In 3D With Obsidian 3D Printer

A company called Kodama have launched a Kickstarter campaign for an affordable 3D printer. The Obsidian 3D printer is designed to be simple to use, affordable, plug-and-play device that allows users to design 3D items from within virtual reality (VR) then turn them into real objects.

The campaign to fund the Obsidian 3D Printer has already reached its goal, accomplishing the impressive feat of hitting its $100,000 (USD) target within only 6 minutes of the campaign launch. Since then, the total has climbed to well over $600,000, with 25 days still left to go.

One of the case studies the campaign mention is that of Jenny Wu, a jewellery designer and design director of LACE. Wu creates statement piece jewellery in stainless steel that uses architectural aesthetic combined with line geometry. The jewellery she creates is designed using VR, then exported to a file to be picked up and printed by the Obsidian 3D printer. Wu is one of the first people in the world to use one of the Obsidian 3D printers.

The Obsidian 3D printer has a camera and remote control app so the printer process can be started and monitored from anywhere using a network connection and a smartphone. This means that any slips or errors during the printing process can be caught and corrected before mess or damage is caused.

The reward tiers for the Obsidian 3D printer range from $99 for a basic Obsidian 3D printer, with an extra £25 for a spool of PolyPlus filament. The highest tier is $249 for the Obsidian Deluxe model, which includes extra features such as a Smart LCD screen, heated bed and specialist high-quality filament. Further information can be found on the Kickstarter page.

VRFocus will bring you further news on the convergence of 3D printing and VR as it becomes available.
