Life In 360°: Take Me On A Rocket Ride

Another week begins, as always on VRFocus with our first journey of the week into the land of 360 degree video. 360 degrees is oft maligned but it’s often the first thing users try with a virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) and is also (arguably) the cheapest and easiest content creatable for VR HMDs.

We’ve had a number of space themed items in the last couple of weeks. With both the concept of space for entertainment and the exploration of space in VR as a focus of education. And why not another? After all as someone once said, space is cool.

Today we’re going up, up and away courtesy of the Maxus 9 rocket. Part of a partnership providing space access to experiments led by the European Space Agency (ESA) between Airbus and the Swedish Space Corporation. It’s thanks to Airbus we get the chance to hitch a 360 degree ride on the rocket as it launches from the Esrange Space Center and sets off into the sky. It’s not perfect, as it is stitching several cameras together but it’s still quite something to see the rocket sections spin away. There’s also telemetry information and scenes from the grounds around the Center and footage from inside both the lab and launch control.

We’ll be back to start your day with another example of 360° video on Wednesday.  Be sure to check back throughout the week on VRFocus for VR, augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) news, features, previews and reviews.
