Mario Kart Meets Mixed Reality in Hado Kart

Ever loved madcap racing titles like Mario Kart so much that you want to just grab a go-kart and race around wildly? While the idea may have crossed your mind, the actual implications of racing round your local streets flinging banana’s everywhere might go down too well. Luckily – for those in Japan at least – Japanese company Meleap, through its Hado branded virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) events has created Hado Kart.

As you can see from the video below, Hado Kart is about racing around a small arena on mini electric go-karts with one expensive addition, a $3,000 USD Microsoft Hololens strapped to your head. The aim of the game is to race around and collect as many coins as possible in the allotted time, avoiding virtual bombs and real-life opponents along the way.

The actual karts themselves do look quite small and nippy, with bumpers on the side just in case of a collision. They also have a handbrake to perform some tasty drifting manoeuvres for those with the skills – although the size of the karts may hamper more portly players.

Would this be cool to see down your local arcade, yes it would be. The likely chance of that happening anytime soon…is probably zero. So if you want a go you’ll need to fly to Japan.
