One Piece Crew Sails Towards PlayStation VR

One Piece is one of the most popular anime series in the world, boasting a huge fanbase. As a result, the crew of Straw Hat Pirates have appeared in many videogames already, featuring in various genres from platformers to action-adventure titles. Now the crew will be heading to the PlayStation VR.

One Piece first began as a manga series written by Eiichiro Oda and serialised in Shonen Jump magazine from 1997 onwards. The anime series adapted from it began broadcasting in Japan in 1999 and saw a North American release in 2004, where is gathered a significant fan following. The story follows a young man named Monkey D. Luffy who has dreams of finding the One Piece which will allow him to become the King of the Pirates. As part of his efforts, he gathers a crew of oddball characters called the Straw Hat Pirates and set sail aboard a ship called the Going Merry to search for the One Piece.

According to a recent issue of Shonen Jump magazine, a PlayStation VR exclusive One Piece videogame is currently being developed, alongside another One Piece title codenamed One Piece: Dawn. Very little information is currently available about the upcoming PlayStation VR title, though screenshots depicting ship exploration have been shown, leading to speculation that the title will revolve around exploration and character interaction. Since One Piece has been praised for its characterisation and humour, this might make sense.

A special demo of the upcoming PlayStation VR title will be available to play as part of the ‘Toyko One Piece Tower’ event, which is due to take place at Tokyo Tower on 22nd July, where up to eight users at once will be able to play a specially created demo of the title.

Further information is planned to be released through the One Piece videogame portal.

VRFocus will bring you further information on the One Piece PlayStation VR title as it becomes available.
