Dragons have formed a core part of mythology and fiction for centuries. It is not a surprise, then, to see a new virtual reality (VR) experience that allows users to experience the joys of climbing on the back of a fire-breathing beast and taking to the skies. Which is what Blackthorn Media are delivering with the newly announced Dragonflight.
Dragonflight is a medieval fantasy that allows players to engage in combat whist mounted on a dragon. Ancient castles filled with archers, and towers shrouded in mist create a dark fantasy world that users can explore and destroy, as destructible environments are included. Dragonflight aims to be not just a self-contained experience, but the prequel to an eight-episode story that the developers hope to continue in later instalments.
Blackthorn Media have previously received praise for their CGI work on films such as The Matrix, Zootopia and The Hunger Games. Dragonflight was first shown to the public at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, with a more complete build being showcased at The Art of VR NY festival.
“Everything we do is executed at the highest level the art and technology of VR can attain. Its amazing what a room full of highly trained CGI artists with decades of experience in cinematic storytelling can do.” said Larry W. Jones, CEO Blackthorn Media. “The only way to ride a more realistic dragon is to breed them.”
“We are thrilled to bring Dragonflight to anyone who ever wondered what it would be like to have your own dragon,” added Michael Conelly, president of Blackthorn Media. “Plus, it’s just fun to ride on the back of a dragon and blow s*** up!”
Dragonflight will be coming to HTC Vive and Oculus Rift via Steam from the 27th July, with a PlayStation VR version expected later in the year. The title will be priced at $19.95 (USD).
VRFocus will bring you further information on Dragonflight and other upcoming VR titles as it becomes available.
