Dota 2 began life as ‘Defence of the Ancients’ an incredibly popular mod for Blizzard’s real-time strategy title Warcraft III. In time, its popularity grew and it span off into its own separate title, Dota 2, produced by Valve. Dota 2 is one of the largest and best-known MOBA titles, which a huge fanbase of dedicated competitors. This week will see some of the best Dota 2 teams enter the International Dota 2 Championships, an event which will be streamed in virtual reality (VR).
Running from 7th-12th August, 2017 at the Keyarena in Seattle Centre, the International Dota 2 Championships will see the best teams from around the world compete against each other to claim the massive $23 million (USD) prize pool, the largest prize yet recorded for an e-sports event, breaking the previous year’s total of over $20 million.
Fans of Dota 2 and e-sports in general can tune in to the ongoing livestream via desktop, on mobile devices or by using the ‘Spectator mode’ Dota VR Hob that allows VR users to get even closer to the action. It isn’t just live action that will be available in VR, replays will also be available, so users can re-watch their favourite wins (or losses).
In order to watch the International Dota 2 Championships via VR, users will need a copy of Dota 2 on Steam and a compatible VR headset, such as Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. Under the DLC section of the Dota 2 library page, users will need to click the checkbox to enable Dota VR.
