Since we first laid eyes on it just over a year ago, Mindshow has remained one of our most anticipated VR projects. From today, you can finally try it out for yourself.
Mindshow is releasing today in Early Access on Steam for the HTC Vive and is completely free to download. You can think of the app as a little like Windows Movie Maker for VR; using your Vive you embody characters in a virtual environment and then act out scenes, recording your movements and words. You can then playback your character’s movements as if watching a movie and embody other characters to react to them.
As you might imagine, the only way to announce the release of a tool like this is to actually use it for a trailer. Check out the hilarious Early Access announcement video below. Or just search Mindshow on YouTube and check out the tons of videos that already exist.
We’ve been playing around with Mindshow for the past few months in beta form. It’s an incredibly versatile tool with a heap of potential. It’s quick and easy to learn, getting you to make basic movies in minutes. You simply choose a handful of avatars, a scene setting, and different props and you’re good to go. Needless to say, we recommend you give it a try.
To celebrate the release the developers are launching a ‘Month of Mindshows’ campaign in which new shows — created by users — will be posted every day. Users will be able to take these shows and remix them with their own acting then reshare them.
This is hopefully just the start for Mindshow. Going forward we’ll want to see new content added to the app. We’d also love to see support for Vive’s Trackers bringing in full body tracking. For now, though, we’re excited to see what everyone makes.
