Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality event takes place next week, and for those wondering what maybe in store some recently leaked images may possibly reveal another headset announcement. Pictures have surfaced on what could be a Samsung version, heralding the company’s next foray into the virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) market after Gear VR.
Appearing on Twitter the images of the headset showcase Samsung’s branding on the back, with two front facing cameras integrated headphones made by AKG – the first Windows Mixed Reality HMD to do so – a scroll wheel underneath for focus and plus/minus buttons most likely for volume.
As for any other details such as specifications there were none. As with any image leak of this type don’t take this information too literally as it could well turn out to be far-fetched.
However it’s not too much a stretch of the imagination to believe Samsung would be working on another headset of some type, seeing that tech rivals HP, Acer, Asus, Lenovo and Dell have all partnered up with Microsoft. And then there’s Google and HTC, with the former having recently acquired employees from the latter to aid its Pixel smartphone development, allowing HTC to invest further into VR, either via HTC Vive or its standalone headset, currently labeled HTC Vive Focus.
It remains to be seen if Samsung is actually working on the headset. If that news comes next week at Microsoft’s event VRFocus will let you know.
