Children’s Charity UNICEF are looking to invest in start-up companies that are developing open-source virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) solutions that can be used to help children all over the world.
UNICEF are looking to make investments in the areas of software for VR/AR, new platforms and methods of access, now content creation tools and unique applications of content. In particular, UNICEF are interested in applications and content that can teach people to perform simple tasks in several languages, noting that VR and AR can present new opportunities for learning. The charity are also on the look out for applications that can decipher large amounts of data or use VR/AR to tell a story in a way that crosses language and cultural barriers.
UNICEF asks interested applicants to remember that UNICEr often operates in areas with limited bandwidth that are hard to reach, and can have poor access to power sources. Affordability and durabilities should be strongly considered when designing the product.
Successful start-up companies will form a cohort working on VR and AR technologies with a UNICEF advisor to advise on open source licences, community building and networking with VR/AR companies and leaders.
To be accepted into the VR/AR cohort, interested start-ups will need a working prototype, whether that is hardware, software or content. Applications will need to be completed by 11:59pm EDT on 17th September, 2017. Further information can be found on the UNICEF website.
VRFocus will continue to bring you news on new opportunities in the VR/AR sector.
