Current virtual reality (VR) technology is very good at immersing you in fantastic environments, whether they’re going for a highly artistic style or something more realistic. But there’s still a long way to go until these virtual worlds look as realistic as real life, with NVIDIA recently saying that GPU’s will need to be 40x more powerful before that can happen.
When asked in an interview with TecMundo (spotted by DSO Gaming) about whether PC’s had reached apex of gaming, Richard Cameron, NVIDIA’s president in Brasil said: “I do not think it has even reached its peak! There are more competitive games, cheaper virtual reality, more championships, I do not know when we’ll see this, I think it’s far away. But we are looking! And a lot of people ask, “How long will the video card evolve,” but the reality is that we’re still a long way from the top of perfect graphics.
“To have [photo realistic] virtual reality, you need 40 times more powerful GPUs. It has many years yet to evolve, but the summit will be the point where you will put on a VR glasses, play and can not distinguish the real from the virtual.”
How far off that reality is, is another question entirely. The release of the current Pascal-based architecture in NVIDIA’s current series 10 has certainly seen graphical improvements, but for VR to reach that sense of realism will require more than just highly powerful GPU’s.
Screen resolutions, field-of-view as well as numerous other factors will have to greatly improve before putting on a head-mounted display (HMD) and starting up the latest experience becomes indistinguishable from the real world.
