Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has today made a surprise announcement: a brand new edition of the PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD) is set to launch at retail. Though no official date has yet been announced, a number of the specifications for both experience and form factor have been revealed.
“The new version, model number CUH-ZVR2, features an updated design that enables the stereo headphone cables to be integrated with the VR headset and a slimmer, streamlined connection cable,” reads the official description on the PlayStation Blog. “There’s also an updated Processor Unit that supports HDR pass through, enabling users to enjoy HDR-compatible PS4 content on a TV without having to disconnect the Processor Unit in between the TV and the PS4 system.”
As stated above, no release date has yet been announced for the new edition of the HMD, however SIE has confirmed that the pricing strategy for the product will not change. In order to distinguish between the original model (CUH-ZVR1) and CUH-ZVR2 model, the packaging will be updated to include the model number printed on the box.
Due to the updated cable systems in CUH-ZVR2, users will not be able to use the new Processor Unit with the original HMD. However, all PlayStation VR software currently available and set for release will support both models of the PlayStation VR HMD.
Only a single image of the CUH-ZVR2 model has been revealed thus far, as can be seen above. No images of the Processing Unit are currently available. VRFocus will keep you updated with this new model of the PlayStation VR as more details become available.
