CCP Games launched its futuristic multiplayer Sparc on PlayStation VR back in August. Today, the studio has brought the title to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, unlocking its cross-platform gameplay.
Sparc is a skill-based, physical sport, where two players use their motion controllers to aim and throw projectiles at each other inside a virtual arena, all the while defending themselves by dodging, blocking, or deflecting incoming attacks from their opponent. With the addition of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive Sparc will now offer cross-platform gameplay – just like EVE: Valkyrie – allowing more players to come into the fold.
Sparc offers one-on-one matches with friends online, or the option to find opponents via matchmaking. There are two gameplay modes, Basic and Advanced, offering both novice and expert competitors challenges at their skill level. Alongside three different arenas, Sparc also features “Courtside,” a freeform social area for spectating in VR where players can watch live matches in-person and queue for their next game. Additionally, a broad range of customisation options are available so players can personalise the compression suit, headgear and knuckle guards.
“Cross-play between PS4 and PC means everyone can experience Sparc from their platform of choice, regardless of whether they are using a PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift or HTC Vive” said Morgan Godat, executive producer of Sparc at CCP Games. “Unifying all our players onto the same Sparc courts in a single interactive community is incredibly satisfying.”
VRFocus reviewed the PlayStation VR version, giving it 4 stars, saying: “Sparc is a well-crafted multiplayer experience that can cheerfully absorb many hours of your time, if you have the stamina (and space in your house) for it. The lack of variety in the arenas and the dearth of single-player features is something of a disappointment, but overall, Sparc is an exciting and fun multiplayer title.”
Sparc can be downloaded for PC from Steam and the Oculus Store today at an MSRP of $19.99 USD ($22.99 CA, €19.99 EUR, £16.99 GBP).
This might be the last VR release from CCP Games for a while as the studio recently announced a change in its policy away from VR titles and towards PC and mobile videogames.
VRFocus will continue its coverage of CCP Games, reporting back with any further possible VR updates.
