Disney Pixar are regarded as one of the best and most respected animation studios, and fans all over the world are eagerly anticipating the release of the studio’s newest movies, titled Coco. To tie in to the film, Pixar have also produced a virtual reality (VR) experience called Coco VR, which is out now on Oculus Rift.
Many animation fans are very excited about Pixar’s first VR experience, which lets users travel to the Land of the Dead as depicted in the film. The experience is designed to be social, to allow up to three people to share the same virtual space, to partake in activities such as modelling outfits, decorating calaca heads and exploring the intricate world created by Pixar’s animation experts.
The Coco film tells the story of a young boy called Miguel, who dreams of being a musician. Chasing his dog, Miguel finds himself stumbling unexpectedly into the Land of the Dead, which features art and brilliant colours inspired by the Dia de los Muertos festival in Mexico.
“Going to the theater is a semi-social experience—you watch a film together, but it’s passive,” explains Oculus Executive Producer Yelena Rachitsky. “In VR, you can actually go on an adventure with a friend. These experiences can create lasting memories, just like going on a trip together. But unlike a journey in real life, VR lets you explore the gorgeous world of Coco, full of unique Easter eggs that sprinkle a bit of magic at every turn. Pixar’s films are masterpieces, and we didn’t want to just reproduce what you can see on screen,” Rachitsky continues, “We wanted to put together an experience that feels inherently VR—where it’s all about the audience.”
Coco VR not only offers a immersive look at the CGI world of the film, but alos lets users peek backstage, showing unreleased footage, concept art and storyboards for the film to give viewers an insight into the creative process behind the film.
Coco VR is available now on Oculus Rift, and will be heading to Samsung Gear VR on 22nd November, 2017. The film, Coco, is due for release on 19th November, 2017.
VRFocus will bring you further information Coco VR and other Pixar VR projects as it becomes available.
