Drone platform DroneBase has announced the launch of an augmented reality (AR) platform for both commercial and recreational drone use called AirCraft.
AirCraft will first launch in beta allowing pilots of any skillset to use their drones to create, edit, and share objects in the sky. Pilots create their own designs using 3D blocks that can be customised with different colors and textures, building giant works of art or a drone racecourse. Or they can create more practical, commercial applications, like rendering a computer-aided design (CAD) model at a construction site or evaluating a post-disaster insurance claim.
Integrating into the existing DroneBase app, which is available for iOS and coming soon for Android, the app features an open world format allowing anyone using AirCraft to view and build upon what other pilots have created.
“AirCraft gives pilots of all skill levels new reasons to fly their drones,” said Dan Burton, Co-Founder and CEO, DroneBase in a statement. “Unlike current AR experiences, AirCraft allows pilots to create and interact with virtual objects in the sky while flying. We’re looking to our community of pilots to see what they will build, how they will use this technology, and what they want next.”
“I’ve recently spent time testing out AirCraft, and I’ve quickly realized how fun and innovative the technology truly is,” said George Garcia, a New Jersey-based DroneBase pilot. “Drones help us interact with the world in completely unique ways, and the features offered by AirCraft expand on this interaction in a way that I’ve never seen done before. From simply making fun objects in parks and on mountains to making additions to large structures, AirCraft is both enjoyable and practical. I am so excited to see what I can create with AirCraft in the future.”
The DroneBase Pilot app is free on the app store, compatible with the following iPhone models: iPhone 6 / 6 Plus, iPhone 6s / 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7 / 7 Plus, iPhone 8 / 8 Plus and iPhone X.
