High Fidelity Partner With DigitalOcean for VR Server Solution

One of the major barriers to entry for mass adoption of virtual reality (VR) is that the current technical requirements for a high level VR experience require a significant financial outlay, since users need to invest in a powerful PC rig, high-end videogames console or top-of-the-line smartphone for the best experience. Moving some of the processing needed to the cloud is a potential solution, and one which is being embraced by High Fidelity in its new partnership with DigitalOcean.

High Fidelity has been working with various companies to produce various types of VR content, though the company is perhaps best known for its open source VR software platform Sandbox. High Fidelity is working with DigitalOcean to integrate DigitalOcean’s Droplet cloud servers into High Fidelity’s existing metaverse account services.

The advantage of this integration is that it would allow High Fidelity users to deploy and manage virtual reality server software directly to the cloud, without needing to be in the same physical location as the hardware. This has significant implications for managers of location-based VR experiences.

The High Fidelity distributed platform can integrate VR environments across various different hardware located in different locations around the world. The DigitalOcean system allows servers to spin up within seconds, reducing lag and response time.

“We are fully committed to a distributed, decentralized future for virtual reality,” said Philip Rosedale, CEO of High Fidelity, “Easily launching a server with a service like DigitalOcean is a key step in opening up VR to everyone.”

“High Fidelity is making it easy for anyone to create and access their own virtual worlds in the cloud,” said Greg Warden, VP, Engineering, DigitalOcean. “Users can create these worlds and spin them up on demand using Droplet cloud servers. The content they create can be stored and accessed at any time by saving it to DigitalOcean’s recently launched object storage product, Spaces. We are excited to see what High Fidelity creators build next!”
