Square Enix has built up a long and prestigious reputation as one of the best developers of Japanese role-playing games (JRPG’s) through its Final Fantasy series. So in 2016, during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) there was quite a bit of excitement when the studio unveiled Final Fantasy XV: VR Experience. As is well known by now, that has been cancelled in favour of another virtual reality (VR) title inspired by the JRPG series, Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV, which has now launched on PlayStation VR.
Just like its forbear, Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV was a surprise announcement at E3 2017, appearing during Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE’s) usual pre-show press conference. It certainly wasn’t expected, as most players would’ve thought Square Enix might have made an RPG, or possibly ported an existing title into VR – like Bethesda with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR. Instead the studio took some of the characters from Final Fantasy and created a fishing videogame.
So players join Noctis, Ignis, Prompto, Gladio, and other familiar faces from the videogame series in a picturesque VR backdrop en route to a fishing pond for some chill time. Of course its not all about sitting back with a few beers and the lads waiting to grab a nibble, there are far more dangerous beasts lurking beneath the waters edge.
There’s a campaign mode where all the action takes place, pitting players against all sorts of creatures, having to reel in the the smaller ones before the major boss battles take place. Where you’ll be pleased to know that you’re armed with more than just a fishing rod, you now have a trusty crossbow at your side to dispatch these monstrous creatures.
Of course there’s also a free fishing mode for those that need to practice or just want to relax and fish. Additionally, Square Enix will be making bounties and tournaments available, offering fresh new challenges as players customise their rods, reels, and lures for the next big catch.
