Despite raising millions of dollars in funding, and repeatedly teasing its audience with cryptic videos and messages on its website, augmented reality (AR) company Magic Leap is still yet to reveal its product. However, a trademark filing may indicate what Magic Leap’s headset may be.
A Trademark application filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office on 6th November, 2017 indicated that the upcoming AR headset could be called Magic Leap One. This potential name has been hinted at before, as reported by Tech Crunch in 2016, when Magic Leap hired former National Geographic marketing head Brenda Freeman as its CMO, and also when a company spokesperson said in a statement that it was: “Full steam ahead toward the launch of Magic Leap One.”
Another Trademark filed at the name time was ‘Magic Leap Monster Battle‘. This is not thought to be related to HoloGrid: Monster Battle, but Magic Leap have filed for trademarks on the name Monster Battle before, but those applications were subsequently abandoned. The timing of the new filing may indicate an intended launch title.
Though there has yet been no official confirmation from the company, a previous report in September indicated that some Magic Leap headsets may begin shipping to a small, limited group of customers within six months. Magic Leap also recently secured a further $502 million (USD) in funding.
Though some indication of what content might be available on the Magic Leap headset, such as Madefire’s Mixed Reality motion comics, there has still not been a public reveal of the headset, though several celebrities have reportedly been hands-on with the device, which supposedly uses light-field technology. There have also been rumours that the company were experiencing problems with the technology for the hardware behind the headset.
