Expectations for the PlayStation VR this holiday season have been incredibly high. Supported by some big name releases including GT Sport, today’s launch of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR and the forthcoming DOOM VFR, the head-mounted display (HMD) was anticipated to receive a boost in sales. However, thanks to a ‘Black Friday’ deal from Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe (SIEE), the PlayStation VR has now become the number 1 selling product on Amazon in the UK.
This chart-topping success isn’t restricted to Amazon’s ‘PC & Video Games’ category, but the site-wide sales charts governing all products available via the online retailer. At the time of writing, the PlayStation VR has seen a sales increase of 46,700 per cent, raising 467 places in the sales chart since the launch of the discounted bundle this morning.
The new PlayStation VR bundles available for a limited time only include the PlayStation VR HMD itself, a PlayStation Camera, PlayStation VR Worlds and either GT Sport or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, all together for just £249.99 GBP. This marks a huge saving off the typical separate selling price of around £469.96.
Today’s launch of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR has been met with a rapturous response from the PlayStation VR community also, with the retail edition currently sitting in sixth place on Amazon’s PC & Video Games sales chart. This is unsurprising however, as VRFocus’ review of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR states: “For those who dreamed of a truly immersive role-playing experience, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is simply the best opportunity available today.”
The PlayStation Move motion controllers have also seen a boost in sales, now in 15th position, and PlayStation VR compatible titles Star Trek: Bridge Crew, GT Sport and Until Dawn: Rush of Blood have also all climbed into the top 50, along with the PlayStation Camera.
The success of the PlayStation VR is currently a leading light for the virtual reality (VR) industry, with price, ease of access and variety of software titles being the formats greatest strengths.
