See Street Fighter II in VR Ahead of This Weekend’s Premiere

Earlier this week VRFocus reported on the announcement that a special virtual reality (VR) experience had been developed based on the classic 16-bit beat-‘em-up, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior. Set to be showcased at the Capcom Pro Tour North American Finals at Red Bull Battle Grounds, Street Fighter II Bonus Stage Virtual Reality is an exclusive experience created specifically for the event.

Recreating a classic bonus stage from the original Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, Street Fighter II Bonus Stage Virtual Reality throws players into the role of one of their favourite combatants as the attempt to destroy a car within the time limit. Watch in the video below as Chun-Li begins the action. Ken, Ryu and Zangief all get a shot at the prize also, just as anyone who plays the VR experience at the Capcom Pro Tour North American Finals at Red Bull Battle Grounds will do so.

Up for grabs are a Red Bull Street Fighter V Can custom gaming cabinet, valued at $3,000 USD, as well as a HTC Vive. Each participant is allowed up to three attempts to set a high score. You can read more about the contest on the rules page at the official website.

While the video below, provided courtesy of Red Bull and Visual Noise Creative, showcases a number of famous Street Fighter combatants aggressively destroying the car – including the use of both punches and kicks, suggesting that the HTC Vive Tracker pucks will be attached to the players’ feet – there is no indication of any form of special moves. Exactly how deep the Street Fighter II Bonus Stage Virtual Reality experience digs into the Street Fighter II: The World Warrior fighting system remains to be seen.

The Capcom Pro Tour North American Finals at Red Bull Battle Grounds, takes place at The Castle in Boston on 18th – 19th November 2017. All attendees will have an opportunity to get hands-on with the Street Fighter II Bonus Stage Virtual Reality experience, though as you might expect the queues will likely be very long.

There’s currently no word about a general release for the Street Fighter II Bonus Stage Virtual Reality experience, though as the application is compatible with the HTC Vive it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to eventually see a Steam release for the videogame. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on the Street Fighter II Bonus Stage Virtual Reality experience.
