The rise in popularity of Esports for both participants and audiences has opened up some now possibilities for developers. The VR Esports market is still in its infancy, and South Korean developer Reality Reflection is seeking to capitalise on this with the launch of a new multiplayer virtual reality sports title that features a futuristic sport played on fast-moving hoverbikes, Speedball Arena.
Players take on the role of a heroic athlete who is involved in the fast-moving sport of Speedball. Set in a neon-lit futuristic world, Speedball Arena is a future sport which features a swift hoverbike and a powerful hook gun to add a new twist to traditional sports.
Built using Unreal Engine 4 in an effort to create smooth, immersive graphical environment, Speedball Arena has been designed as a multiplayer online VR experience where skill is the most important factor. The development team at Reality Reflection have aimed to create an intuitive control experience that is open to VR and non-VR users alike.
Players with an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive can engage with gameplay using tracked motion controllers, while non-VR players can use the traditional keyboard and mouse combination.
“We’re thrilled to launch Speedball Arena, which will give users a unique and fun experience to play with real friends online. Based on the fair gameplay sports rule, we hope Speedball Arena to evolve as one of most popular skill-based eSports game in the future.” said Wooram Son, CEO of Reality Reflection.
Previously known by the title of ‘Snatchers‘, the developers have recently introduced a big update which allowed non-VR players to enjoy the title alongside friends with VR headsets, with the introduction of cross-platform play which not only allows VR and non-VR players to join the same matchmaking pool, but also allows HTC Vive and Oculus Rift players to play together. The update also introduced improved AI systems and a variety of bug fixes.
Speedball Arena is available on Steam for £7.19 (GBP). Further information and updates can be found on the Steam store page.
