Mobile videogame developer Zynga has revealed that its popular racing title CSR Racing 2 (CSR2) has now been upgraded with an augmented reality (AR) mode using Apple’s ARKit and Unity, exclusively for iPhone and iPad running iOS 11.
Players will now be able to get up close to the cars in their garage, being able to view their favourite vehicles almost as if they were right in front of them. Zynga developed CSR2 to be authentic, ensuring every vehicle has been meticulously recreated, with precise attention paid to every aspect of the customization experience, from paint colors and finishes to interior leather colors and trims.
This goes a step further with AR Mode, allowing players to explore every aspect of the car, including opening all doors, hoods and trunks; experimenting with spoiler options; inspecting the engine; and stepping inside their computer generated vehicle; scale their vehicle to showroom specs; place and reposition their supercar in a real-world environment; layer reflections on the vehicle by applying a selection of reflection cubemaps; or photograph and video the cars using the camera feature to then share across social media channels.
“Stunning visual fidelity, unparalleled vehicle authenticity and genre-defining levels of customization are the cornerstones of CSR2,” said Julian Widdows, Vice President of Games, CSR2, in a statement. “AR is the perfect platform to showcase the incredible level of detail and care we take in seamlessly recreating some of the world’s most desired cars by bringing them off the mobile screen and into our players’ very own driveways. Leveraging Apple’s ARKit, CSR2′s AR Mode blurs the line between the digital and real-world, delivering an immersive experience that puts our players in the owner’s seat of the car of their dreams.”
While this is the first time Zynga has adopted AR into one of its products it’s not the first for immersive content. Last year the company released a virtual reality (VR) title called Mountain Goat Mountain, free-to-play experience for Oculus Rift which was based on an Android and iOS videogame of the same name.
VRFocus will continue its coverage of Zynga, reporting back with any further VR or AR updates.
