It is December 26th 2017 and welcome to Boxing Day. Christmas is over with for yet another year. It all seems to go so quickly doesn’t it? And now all you’ve got to deal with now is all that washing up, getting that stain out of the carpet that no one has yet owned up to, sorting out what to do with all the leftovers and desperately hunting through the bathroom cabinets for some Alka-Seltzer or Milk of Magnesia or something.
As I mentioned last year at this particular time December the 26th is called Boxing Day. There are indeed, traditionally (at least in the UK) sales that start at this time but the purchase of even more things and boxing them up is not why the day is called this. The name itself however derives from an old tradition of servants receiving a ‘Christmas-box’ in the time immediately after Christmas Day. These often contained a bonus of some kind, as well as leftover food which the servants would then be able to take to their families after having served their masters on Christmas Day. Actually, Boxing Day was never really necessarily meant to be December 26th, but the first weekday that followed Christmas Day. Over time though this has simplified down to being specifically the day afterwards. For many countries that observe it it’s also now a recognised Bank Holiday. Time off for all!
Back in 2016 I informed you that “before you ask, no, there is no boxing related video for Boxing Day”. Instead giving you the clearly appropriate substitute of sandboarding in Peru. Well, in 2017 boxing you shall have. All the below come from SHOWTIME Sports’ YouTube channel and show both fights and behind the scenes action.
First up is part of SHOWTIME’s ALL ACCESS series from June 2016. It follows boxer Shawn Porter’s training camp.
Next up we’ve a Middleweight fight – and a quick one – from December 2015 as Daniel “The Miracle Man” Jacobs takes on “Kid Chocolate” Peter Quillin.
We head back to the ALL ACCESS series with another June 2016 video. This time we’re off to Florida with then WBA Welterweight World Champion Keith “One Time” Thurman giving us the other half of the story started by Shawn Porter. And going a bit into their personal histories growing up together in the world of boxing.
Back to the actual fighting now for our fourth and final video of the day with this January 2015 video showing then WBC Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder defend against Artur Szpilka. There’s a knockout coming… but for who?
