Performer Seeks Funding for Virtual Reality Project

A growing number of artists and performers have been exploring virtual reality (VR) as a new way to reach audiences and explore new aspects of their work. Performance artists Degenerate Art Ensemble are seeking funding to produce their own VR spectacle.

Degenerate Art Ensemble are known for creating dance and theatre projects on a large scale as well as concerts, site transformations and public social experiences. The group is now seeking money through crowdfunding platform Kickstarter for a new type of performance which blends personal experience, music, dance, folk tales and technology which they have named Skeleton Flower.

Skeleton Flower has been written to be a semi-autobiographical story drawing on the troubled personal history of director Haruko Crow Nishimura. This story of struggle is blended with folk tales of female protagonists overcoming terrible opposition to bring their desires to fruition.

Degenerate Art Ensemble is working with VR film maker Mischa Jakupcak along with visual artist Elizabeth Jameson and video artists Leo Mayberry, Ian Lucero and Laura James to crafts the virtual reality performance.

The project is seeking $5,000 (USD) in funding, with the Kickstarter due to end on 23rd December, 2017. Funding tiers range from $5 to add the backer’s name on the doner’s list, $10 gets the backer a mix tape of the team’s favourite music. A $50 pledge gets the backer access to extra VR content only available to backers. The top tier of $2,000 gets the backer their own private dance performance.

The team at Degenerate Art Ensemble say that the money raised will hep ensure the artists involved are paid a fair wage for their work, and that high quality materials and equipment are utilised for the creation of the project. Skeleton is expected to be delivered to backers in August of 2018.

Further information can be found on the Kickstarter page.
