Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has begun its livestream from the PlayStation Experience in Anaheim, California, showcasing some of the titles attendees can expect to see on the show floor, with some videogames being shown for the first time. Just like the Paris Games Week (PGW) conference the company has jumped right in with several announcements for PlayStation VR, revealing Wipeout VR and a very special virtual reality (VR) experience based on The Last Guardian.
Most PlayStation 4 owners should have heard of The Last Guardian as it was one of the biggest releases in 2016. Developed by SIE Japan Studio while being designed and directed by Fumito Ueda from Team Ico (Ico (2001) and Shadow of the Colossus (2005)), the title is a third-person puzzle adventure experience where you controls a young lad who must cooperate with half-bird-half-mammal creature, Trico, to succeed.
For the VR title SIE has created a cut down experience that’s now first-person. Shawn Layden, President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America (SIEA) and Chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios said on stage that The Last Guardian VR Experience has been based on the original title rather than porting part of it. He did say that it’ll offer around 15 to 20 minutes of gameplay.
While this isn’t much, and more akin to the tech demos that littered VR headsets in 2016, the experience is completely free, created as a Christmas present for all PlayStation VR’s loyal players. It’ll launch next week via PlayStation Store on 12th December 2017.
SIE has been massively discounting PlayStation VR over the past few weeks because of Black Friday, which has led to the headset achieving some pretty impressive sales figures and putting the HMD well ahead of its PC-based rivals Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
Expect there to be plenty more announcements over the weekend, all of which VRFocus will keep you updated on.
