Last month VRFocus reported on the announcement that zChess would launch a virtual reality (VR) adaptation of their popular mobile videogame, Chess with Zombies: Pawn of the Dead, via Oculus Home in the near future. Now, that future has arrived, as the videogame arrives via the Early Access channel today.
Chess with Zombies: Pawn of the Dead, as the name implies, is a videogame adaptation of the classic board game chess. The twist is, of course, that the player is battling against zombies and the legions of the undead. Chess with Zombies: Pawn of the Dead features a cartoonish art style and detailed animation for the on-board action as players make their moves and take the opponent’s pieces.
The VR edition of Chess with Zombies: Pawn of the Dead has been designed to accommodate players of all skill level. The videogame has options that will allow newcomers to learn the basics, such as highlighting available moves for each piece, as well as extreme difficulty settings for chess pros. Customisable options such as three different piece sizes, move take-back and a demonstration mode allow the player to tailor the difficulty to their liking, in addition to the 10 available preset skill levels which, according to zChess, range from ‘absolute beginner to tournament level’.
zChess is a team of friends who first developed the mobile edition of Chess with Zombies: Pawn of the Dead. After becoming interested in VR the team decided to port Chess with Zombies: Pawn of the Dead to the new medium, and the results of which can be seen in the gameplay video below. The piece capture sequence is available for all, viewed from board level, captured directly from the forthcoming Oculus Home Early Access edition of Chess with Zombies: Pawn of the Dead.
Chess with Zombies: Pawn of the Dead allows players to play as either the human or zombies pieces, and is now available to download via the Oculus Store priced at $4.99 USD, as an Oculus Home Early Access title. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on Chess with Zombies: Pawn of the Dead and any further VR projects from zChess.
