There’s really very little in the way of VR releases this week, so we thought we’d expand our search a little and include some of the titles we missed while we were off on the Christmas break. With those in mind, there’s definitely a few things you should check out to kick off your 2018.
Tactera, from E McNeill
Price: $14.99 (Rift, Vive, Windows)
The second game from Darknet developer E McNeill, Tactera is the real-time strategy game many of us envisioned when we first picked up a VR headset. Two armies compete on a 3D holographic battlefield and the player with the best tactics will come out on top. Featuring a procedural campaign, skirmish missions and even competitive multiplayer modes, this is one to tide you over until Brass Tactics arrives.
Skylight, from E McNeill
Price: $14.99 (Vive, Windows)
It’s a double bill of E McNeill this week, with his third game, Skylight, also jumping from mobile VR to PC-based headsets. Skylight is similar to Tactera is tone, with holographic projections of ships duking it out in a war room, but this time the real-time strategy gets tossed out in favor of turn-based gameplay. Again, there’s a campaign, skirmish matches and multiplayer modes to enjoy.
KFC The Hard Way, from W+K Lodge
Price: Free (Rift)
A few months ago we wrote about a hilariously bizarree bit of marketing from KFC consisting of a totaliterian training simulator that taught you how to make the brand’s famously fried chicken. Use your Touch controllers to batter and fry chicken in a fight for freedom, but don’t anger the Colonel too much because, frankly, he seems a lot scarier here than he does in the TV adverts.
Neon, from Galactig
Price: $9.99 (Rift)
An arcade shooter that may appeal to retro gaming fans that have a futuristic headset. Neon puts you in control of an ion cannon then pits you in battles across 42 levels using different power-ups to destroy enemies. Extra points for the retro trailer.
Tank of War VR
Price: $19.99 (Rift, Vive)
We’re including this one because, visually, it looks pretty polished, though the poor localization could be a roadblock for some. This is a multiplayer tank battler with realistic models. A cockpit view puts you inside vehicles and you then drive into 5 v 5 matches.
