The Beautiful Game Comes To VR As Cherry Pop Games Announce VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club

According to figures released by the sport’s governing body, FIFA, over a decade ago there are over 265 million male and female players of football (or soccer, if you really must) around the world. And that’s not counting taking into account match officials, be they referees, linesmen/assistants and others. That takes the total up to 270 million. 270 million people, the equivalent to 4% of the world’s population (at the time) who are in some way actively involved in sport.

VRFC LogoThere’s been several attempts to bring ‘the beautiful game’ to virtual reality (VR) although most have been similar in style to Frame Interactive’s Headmaster, a football skills-based variation on the gallery shooter. However, Cherry Pop Games, the developer of the ever-popular Sports Bar VR, are looking to change this with a more representative VR videogame of the sport.

It comes in the form of their newly announced first-person title VRFC Virtual Reality Football Club, coming to all three major VR head mounted displays – PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift – to be launched worldwide at the end of this month. VRFC features will include online play for up to eight players, cross-play compatibility and a 90fps frame rate. With a companion app being released after launch for iOS and Android devices.

February 27th 2018 will see players be able to take on an active football game, created by Cherry Pop Games utilising Unreal and the developer’s K4 physics system. Implementing ‘Agile locomotion’, which Cherry Pop Games say will enable you to kick, dribble, tackle, pass, cross, head and shoot in VR like never before – and get quite the work out as well.

“We’re delighted to be able to share VRFC with the world.” Said Gemma Jessop of Cherry Pop Games in a statement. “As a team we have had a ball (pun intended) making this game. At Cherry Pop we like to push the boundaries on what’s possible in VR, and with VRFC we certainly did that. We wanted to be able to provide a new experience to the ever-growing VR community. We are utterly passionate about VR; it’s a tactile and wonderful platform, and VRFC brings football to life in a new and exciting way.”
