One of the things virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) has been praised for is the way it has changed how videogames developers, film creators, artists, etc. are able to tell a story. On the videogame side we’ve seen this utilised expertly in VR through titles like The Lost Bear and more recently PlayStation VR title Moss but when it comes to AR we don’t see it as much. Most AR titles of note so far have been geo-location based offerings like Pokémon GO and its seemingly endless parade of clones and adaptions.
But today launches an AR title that certainly comes under that bracket, Silent Streets: The Mockingbird’s Last Dive. Which, a couple of weeks ago received its official launch date as well as what appeared to be a tweak to its name becoming Silent Streets: The Mocking Bird. Whatever occurred in that time has reversed that decision, however, and we are back to The Mockingbird’s Last Dive again – except on the App store where it is Silent Streets: Mockingbird. Confused? So are we.
The ARKit powered title for iOS, which is also coming to Android at a later date, brings the nineteenth century into your home for the first in a series of AR mysteries under the Silent Streets name. In this first episode, players enter the Sherlock Holmes-like world of The Mockingbird’s Last Dive and Snowport, a grim town with even grimmer goings on below the surface. A series of savage homicides is plaguing the town, but who is behind it? It’s up to you the player to discover the clues and ask the right questions as you get to grips with some hands-on detective work in order to find the guilty and bring them to justice.
“Forge friendships with unforgettable characters, interrogate suspects, and bring justice to this grim world! Blood always flows freely in the docklands’ bare-knuckle boxing scene, but to Snowport’s new Detective, there’s more than the usual corruption going down. Who killed the championship favourite? What experiments is the Science Society conducting? And how is the church involved? Dig to the bottom of the truth in Silent Streets: The Mockingbird’s Last Dive!”
The title developed by Irish studio Funbakers and published by Playdius goes live today on the App Store for $2.99 (USD). Guillaume Jamet, Pladius’ Head of Publishing explained why they went in the direction they have with the Silent Streets series.
“There are simply too many similar games crowding the mobile market. We’re interested in supporting premium, story-driven games, ones that will stand out from the crowd and encourage folks to think and play outside the box. With its focus on story and narrative – and its unique ARKit powered gameplay features, we think Silent Streets: The Mockingbird’s Last Dive is such a title.”
You can see a launch trailer for the videogame below, which shows off some of the style, story and general atmosphere. VRFocus will bring you more news about the Silent Streets series as it progresses.
