Independent developer iLLOGIKA’s research and development lab has been busy experimenting with virtual reality (VR), and is now ready to publicly showcase two projects, FlickBlocks and Air Punch.
Locomotion has always been tricky in VR, with developers choosing stationary experiences to begin with before moving on to teleport in the early days. Since then plenty of advancements have been made, either with smooth locomotion or more inventive solutions like Survios’ Fluid-Locomotion System for Sprint Vector. iLLOGIKA’s Air Punch is the company’s new locomotion technique using punches called Punch Dash. Air Punch allows 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF) movement while mitigating the motion sickness issues usually found in VR. So you punch forward to move forward, in the air to jump, and do a hook to go around an obstacle. With five different arenas to explore, Air Punch can be freely downloaded on itch.io for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
Looking like a cross between Jenga and Tetris, FlickBlocks mixes puzzle and strategy-based gameplay into one experience. FlickBlocks has been designed to showcase iLLOGIKA’s ability to develop block construction-based videogame design with accurate physics in a VR environment. All players need to do is grab pieces by pulling and holding the trigger to start stacking them. To score point all you need to do is fill a layer, but if more than three pieces are on the ground at the same time it’s game over. The FlickBlocks prototype is published on itch.io with support for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
The Montreal-based developer has worked on a number of high profile VR and non-VR titles including: Cuphead, Lara Croft Go, Hitman Go VR, Disney Infinity Action, Time Machine VR and The Other Room. With the release of FlickBlocks and Air Punch iLLOGIKA is highlighting its commitment to the production of VR development tools, demonstrating its latest achievements in animation pipeline, texturing and destruction tools. VRFocus will continue its coverage of iLLOGIKA, reporting back with its latest VR developments.
