I’m guessing you can see where this week might well be going now if we started it with lions and we’re now on to other big cats.
Tigers are pretty amazing creatures all told. The largest cat species in the world and sharing the same genus within the Felidae family as the lion, as well as the jaguar, leopard and snow leopard. (In case you’re wondering the cheetah whilst part of the Felidae family is actually the only surviving member of the Acinonyx genus.) Less than 4,000 tigers are alive in the wild today which takes in all six surviving subspecies of tiger, in comparison at the start of the last century the number was believed to be around 100,000. The tiger having been hunted and pushed of its more traditional lands according to reports it can only be found in 7% of the world it once tread as humans pushed it back to brink of extinction – and in the case of the Caspian tiger, Bali tiger and others, sadly pushed beyond it.
Our video today comes not from South East Asia where most wild tigers are now found but actually from Europe. Filmed as it was by Dutch YouTube channel VR Gorilla and from inside the enclosure (or “tigers’ lair” as they put it in the description) at Dierenpark Amersfoort, a zoo in Utrecht province, just on the edge of Birkhoven Forest in the Netherlands. In The Eye Of The Tiger VR Experience, one big cat in question is let out for the day – and it’s pretty hungry. Bones are basically nothing to a tiger so having a piece of meat swinging around from the ceiling it isn’t going to last long – and judging from the footage (and the crack you hear) it certainly does not.
