Today Magic Leap released their developer SDK for the upcoming augmented reality (AR) head-mounted display (HMD) the Magic Leap One, revealing support for Unreal Engine 4.
The news comes from both Magic Leap and Epic Games who made the announcement alongside the release of the Lumin SDK. The news, which is part of a larger ongoing partnership between the two companies means that developers will be able to start building AR experiences with Unreal Engine 4 on the Magic Leap One Creator Edition.
Rio Caraeff, Chief Content Officer at Magic Leap commented on the news by saying: “Unreal has long been the go-to development engine for some of the top game studios in the world. This partnership with Epic will enable more creators to join Magic Leap on its journey, creating content for the next computing platform.”
Alongside the news of support for the Magic Leap One hardware, Epic Games have also released a collection of resources, including Unreal Engine 4 documentation, a robust sample project showcasing Magic Leap One’s unique features and a custom Unreal Editor for creating content using the newly release Lumin SDK. Developers can access the resources via the preview documentation along with the custom toolset on the Unreal Engine tab of the Epic Games launcher, or build from the Unreal Editor source on GitHub. The full support for Magic Leap One will ship in Unreal Engine 4.20 which is due out in the summer of this year.
Unreal Engine 4 supports a number of features for the Magic Leap One including the following:
- Head tracking
- Eye tracking
- Gesture and hand tracking
- Room scanning and meshing
- Spatialized audio
- Microphone input
- 6DOF hand controller (Totem) tracking
- Vulkan and OpenGL support
- Use of Unreal Engine 4’s desktop and mobile forward rendering paths
Epic Games Founder and CEO Tim Sweeney said: “Magic Leap has truly created something magical in this combination of hardware breakthroughs and software innovations, which represents a giant leap towards the coming spatial computing revolution.”
As many content creators around the world are already using the power of Unreal Engine 4 to deliver outstanding experiences, the support for Magic Leap One opens up plenty of new opportunities for developers. This includes studios such as Framestore, ILMxLAB, Schell Games and Peter Jackson’s Wingnut AR.
