Samurai Punk’s satire on US gun culture The American Dream is due to launch for PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift this week, in a couple of days. For PlayStation VR owners however, The American Dream will also come to retail stores for those players who like an actual disk, hitting shelves across Europe on 6th April.
The retail release of The American Dream is down to a collaboration between Samurai Punk and Perp Games, the latter of which has had a hand in bringing several virtual reality (VR) titles to stores. These have included boxed editions of: Radial-G: Racing Revolved by Tammeka Games; Viewpoint Games’ VR Karts; and Don’t Knock Twice from Wales Interactive.
“We can see people are loving what we are doing in bringing exciting and original PSVR titles to box,” said Rob Edwards, MD of Perp Games in a statement. “In The American Dream, we are working with probably the most original and exciting title out there. We have been massively impressed with Samurai Punk and their use of satire in gameplay takes VR in a new direction.”
The American Dream is Samurai Punk’s first foray into VR, having previously worked on split-screen shooter, Screencheat, and exploration adventure, Feather. The title is a dark, satirical look at a world that imagines people’s everyday needs are solved with guns. Set during a 1950’s World Fair, a group of leading gun manufacturers have constructed a vast complex to guide the American Patriot towards a better and richer existence by demonstrating how guns can help through key moments of life. Whether that’s cooking burgers with guns, opening a canned beverage with a well placed bullet, or even delivering a baby.
Talking about the videogames’ production MD Nicholas McDonnell of Samurai Punk commented: “The American Dream represents a huge step forward in terms of production and scope for us. Bringing this together took a team larger than anything Samurai Punk had before including collaborators from Canada, the US and other states of Australia. We worked with the world class A Shell in the Pit Audio team to lead the voice, sound and music design for The American Dream which was pivotal to bringing the world to life.”
The American Dream on PlayStation VR will be available in boxed form across the EU from 6th April 2018, with dates in other territories to follow. For any further updates, keep reading VRFocus.
