Last month it was revealed that the popular Japanese role-playing videogame (RPG) series Dragon Quest would be getting a virtual reality (VR) iteration at the VR Zone in Shinjuku. Now, the first screenshots of the upcoming title have been released ahead of the open event in the coming days.
Dragon Quest VR will allow players a chance to get fully immersed in their favourite RPG title like never before, thanks to the power of the HTC Vive and tracking technologies. With an area of 20 x 12 meters set up for the play area, players will be in a party of four with a warrior, a monk, and a wizard in a battle to defeat Dragon Quest III‘s villain, Zoma. Players will also get to meet a floating pink slime named “Homie” who will act as a guide to the players throughout the experience.
The title will be playable at the VR Zone in Shinjuku, Tokyo and is being decorated for the event, with plenty of Dragon Quest related visuals planned to be used throughout. Dragon Quest VR is set to open up to the public on 27th April with an opening event set for 25th April.
Back during the annoucement of the Dragon Quest VR, series creator Yuji Horii expressed how delighted he was with the upcoming title saying: “It’s honestly like a dream. I really felt like I was holding a sword and shield and walking through the world — I thought it was incredibly fun.”
Since it’s first release back in 1986, the Dragon Quest series has been a worldwide success with a number of mainline entries and spin off titles. The next title to be released in the mainline is Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age which is due to release on PC and PlayStation 4 on 4th September in the West. There is no information if Dragon Quest VR will be making it’s way to the West anytime soon.
The opening event for Dragon Quest VR will be held on 25th April, with the creator of the series Yuji Horii in attendance. The opening event will be livestreamed over on YouTube which you can watch here.
