Game Cooks Turn Frogger into VR Multiplayer Mayhem in Highway Madness

In 2017 indie virtual reality (VR) developer Game Cooks launched its first VR title via Steam Early Access, a first-person shooter (FPS) called Vindicta. As a single-player title Game Cooks began experimenting with multiplayer, creating a side project to test out ideas which eventually turned into Highway Madnessa free early access experience which arrived in February for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. Recently, VRFocus caught up with Game Cooks’ Director of Publishing, Lara Noujaim to find out more.

Initially, Highway Madness was a modern VR version of Frogger, where players have to navigate a dangerous highway, running past car and trucks as quickly as possible to get to the finish line. Yet Game Cooks didn’t stop there, with Highway Madness featuring four gameplay modes Roof Jumping, Standoff, and Shootout, all offering different social multiplayer features. Shootout is an arena based deathmatch competition that features some high flying gameplay, while Standoff is a 1 vs 1 shooting challenge. Roof Jumping is very similar to its road-based cousin, just this time you’re hopping along roofs as fast as possible.

Noujaim goes into greater detail about the different aspects of Highway Madness and why its already accrued 30,000 downloads claims Noujaim. She surmises that being free to download obviously helps, but it also helps that Highway Madness has a fun addictive gameplay style whilst being designed to be as comfortable to play as possible.

The studio isn’t stopping there, whilst in early access the team also plans on adding further content including new mode, arenas, characters and lots more. What players will be pleased to hear is that Highway Madness will continue to be free with Game Cooks having no plans to monetise the videogame, the team wants to keep the experience open and social for everyone.

Vindicta is still Game Cooks premium VR experience, offing fast paced FPS gameplay with a realistic movement system where players can swing their arms – just like when you’re walking – to move around the levels. Vindicta is still in early access retailing for £10.99 GBP.
