STXsurreal, the virtual reality (VR) and immersive content division of Robert Simonds’ STX Entertainment, has announced several new original short-form series in development including Jay and Silent Bob VR.
STXsurreal work to unlock the value of the direct connection stars have with their fans through the development, financing, production, marketing and distribution of film, television, VR, digital video, music and live entertainment content. With the newly announced expansion of more VR products, STXsurreal is continuing to make this goal a reality and bring fans closer to the experiences.
Starting off with Jay and Silent Bob VR, the short-form, live-action comedy series will be written, directed and produced by Kevin Smith along with longtime collaborator Jason Mewes as they revisit fan-favorite characters Jay and Silent Bob. Shot entirely from the perspective of Bob, viewers will embody the silent fanboy himself as they follow Jay through a number of idiotic adventures.
Writer Derek Kolstad will also be working with STXsurreal on an original live-action short-form series set in 1974, and follow a mysterious government agent sent to investigate an aircraft crash in rural New Mexico. Known for his work on The John Wick Trilogy, this untitled project will be a sci-fi thriller that will keep viewers on the edge of their seat.
STXsurreal will also be working to produce The Kiev Exchange with Mile 22 director Peter Berg. Written by Umair Aleem, The Kiev Exchange will be a gritty, pulse-pounding action-thriller following the CIA’s elusive paramilitary force, Ground Branch, as they negotiate a hostage exchange in a public square. There will also be a action-comedy series staring actor Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Blade Runner: 2049) that will be an expansion of an already setup collaboration between Bautista and STXsurreal.
Finally, director and producer Ed Helms (The Hangover, The Office) and writer Frank Lesser (The Colbert Report), are creating a live-action comedy series titled New Tricks. This will follow an aimless 30 year-old Radio Shack employee who receives a visit from a magical elf one day and learns he is destined to become the world’s greatest wizard.
All of these new VR titles will be premiering on the SURREAL channel, launching as an app on VR head-mounted displays (HMDs) in mid 2018. STXsurreal are working to produce content in a completely new format that will bridge the gap between traditional widescreen and 360-degree video and with the newly announced titles, their VR offering is ever growing.
