The reboot of the Planet of the Apes film franchise has been a big success for 20th Century Fox and it looks to continue that momentum with the release of Crisis on the Planet of the Apes VR for PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive today.
First announced back in February, the videogame is set in the new Planet of the Apes universe with one slight twist to the films, you play one of the apes. If you’ve seen the films you’ll know that the Simian Flu wiped out half of humanity over five years whilst evolving primates. You play an ape with advanced intelligence, captured and held prisoner in a heavily guarded scientific facility as mankind desperately searches for a cure.
Created by FoxNext and Imaginati Studios, the teams sought to create a unique motion mechanic that would allow players to have a closer connection to the character, being able to run, jump and hide in a similar fashion to an ape.
“There’s power in being able to feel both the physical aspects and emotional conscience of an Ape with advanced intelligence. Players will move like an ape while experiencing first-hand, the discrimination and reprehensible treatment of the Apes in this universe,” said Brendan Handler, SVP & GM, FoxNext VR Studio in a statement. “Bringing this level of immersive gameplay to the long legacy of what Fox does best – compelling storytelling – is at the core what FoxNext VR Studios delivers to VR gamers.”
To make the experience even more immersive for PC players the developers partnered with DTS for improved surround sound on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. “The Crisis on The Planet of the Apes storyline becomes even more compelling as players experience immersive audio from DTS. It heightens the senses and brings you even deeper into the story,” said Geir Skaaden, EVP, Chief Production and Services Officer, XperiCorp.
Crisis on The Planet of the Apes VR is available to purchase now for PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, being sold for £11.99 GBP on PS Store, £10.99 on Oculus Store and on Steam there’s a 33 percent discount, dropping the price from £11.39 down to £7.63.
