Over the year or so on VRFocus we’ve seen a big rise in the number of stories that we have covered which revolve around the use of virtual reality (VR) in the fields of architecture and design. However, that’s a subject that has strangely been avoided on Life In 360° for the most part. Kind of strange, as it’s the sort of thing I have a deep appreciation of.
So, when I saw a recent video pop up on my search I thought it was high time we had a look. Add that it’s also in relation to something which has just opened this last week, plus it’s in London and we’ve not had anything from London in some considerable time… Well, we have a winner, ladies and gentlemen.
The video in question is a tour inside the newly constructed Serpentine Pavilion in Kensington Gardens, more specifically outside the Serpentine Gallery (hence the name). I should perhaps emphasise that this is this year’s pavilion. It’s been designed by Mexican architect Frida Escobedo and the secluded area features tiles that appear to be woven together.
“A pavilion, especially one like [this], has a very dual nature,” said Escobedo, in discussion with architecture and design magazine Dezeen. “On one hand it is very site-specific to Hyde Park and the gallery. But it only has a temporality of four months here, then it becomes permanent structure in a new home. We had to deal with this – knowing where the pavilion was going to be, but not knowing where it was going to go next. How to resolve this contradiction? Anchor it to space, but also make it spaceless. It’s meant to be a compass that allows you to locate yourself, not just geographically, but to give you larger understanding of what social space and can be.”
