Augmented reality (AR) headset manufacturer Meta have debuted their first software application in the form of the Meta Viewer, an AR 3C CAD Visualization application designed for use with the Meta 2 headset.
Revealed during the AWE 2018 conference earlier this week, the new application is currently in a beta state. Meta Viewer bring functionality including collaboration and voice command to the 3D CAD world. Users are able to easily open and visualize AR-ready 3D CAD models while keeping the integrity of the model and design information. This means that anyone in the product development chain – from designers to salespeople – are able to utilize the tool without requiring any specialty technical skills.
“Utilizing these products drastically changes the product development lifecycle by reducing costs and saving time through quick and easy collaboration. The result is faster time-to-market and decreased customer acquisition cost.” Said Joe Mikhail, chief revenue officer at Meta. “The Meta 2 headset and Meta Viewer Beta combination provides our customers with the most immersive, real-time visualization and interaction with 3D designs and models.”
By bridging the gap between CAD models and physical counterparts, users are quickly and easily able to share their design vision digitally before the physical design stage even begins. Viewing the CAD models in high quality, immersive AR worlds also ensures that users have a deep and rich understanding of the product at any stage of development. The goal is to improve and shorten the design timeline by generating insights that can only occur in 3D, ensuring early design validation and approvals that will in turn, shorten the production life cycle.
The Meta Viewer supports a wide range of 3D model file formats and offers basic model interaction via hand motions built in. Models states and animations and supported as well allowing for study of the motion within the 3D files to be reviewed. Other information such as colours, materials, stats are also included along with real-world 1:1 scale as standard.
The Meta Viewer is currently in beta and is available to download now from the company website. VRFocus will be sure to keep you up to date on all the latest from the company in the future, so stay tuned for more.
