Royal Caribbean revealed last year that it would be embracing virtual reality (VR) as an advertising venue, using the technology to promote the companies cruise by offering tours and cruises, all within virtual space. Now, after a decade of rapid growth and development in China and introducing the world’s most advanced cruise ships to the market, Royal Caribbean have debut their newest ship, Spectrum of the Seas, which is set to redefine the vacation market.
The Spectrum of the Seas has been designed and built to deliver an unforgettable vacation experience. With private enclave for suite quests, new stateroom categories, innovative dining concepts, and stunning features and experiences, the ship is able to accommodate 4,246 guests and 1,551 international crew members. On top of all that, the ship will feature an iconic Sky Pad, VR bungee trampoline experience located on the aft of the ship.
This VR experience will invite guests to wear a head-mounted display (HMD) to transport themselves to another time and planet. The out-of-this-world experience is intended to be used by guests of all ages, alongside being enjoyed without a VR headset as well, for those who would rather look out over the ocean as they leap toward the sky. Offering an immersive VR experience on a cruise ship is a big move forward and depending on the success may lead to further attractions being included in future builds.
“When Quantum of the Seas made her debut in Shanghai three years ago, it changed the face of cruising in China. Fast forward to today, and we are revealing just how we’ll transform the cruise vacation market, yet again, with the debut of Spectrum of the Seas,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “The introduction of our highly anticipated Quantum Ultra Class will represent a quantum leap forward in ship design and experiences specifically tailored to Chinese guests.”
With the Spectrum of the Seas, Royal Caribbean are continuing to embrace the latest in VR technology beyond that of just advertising, building custom experiences for their guest to enjoy on the open sea. The Spectrum of the Seas is expected to set sail from Shanghai starting in June 2019 and VRFocus will be sure to bring you all the latest on the companies VR offerings in the future, so stay tuned for more.
