With the World Cup entering the knockout phase, millions have been watching how the tournament plays out. For those who are equipped with a virtual reality (VR) headset, its possible to get much closer to the action by using apps like the BBC Sports VR app on the PlayStation VR.
For footballs fans, the BBC Sports VR apps gives unprecedented access to all the excitement of the 2018 World Cup in Russia by bringing users right up close and providing a range of features to suit fans of all different types.
Footage of every fixture previously covered by the BBC is available to re-watch in highlight form, and of course, every future match is available to watch live. There are several features to fans to explore, such as options to choose your preferred camera angle, check fixture times and have a look at the current team line-up.
Users are presented with a VR environment styled like the executive boxes at many sports stadiums, complete with a window overlooking a virtual stadium. When the match starts, you can be automatically moved to a front-row seat so you don’t miss any of the action.
Six-degrees-of-freedom means that all of the stadium is available to view, letting users experience the match as if they were setting in the real-life stadium. There are three viewing positions to pick, one behind each goal and one right on the half-way line, and you can switch between these at any point.
The executive box contains a number of virtual TVs that lets users view video on-demand services, check times for upcoming games or look at the results of other matches. A host of information and statistics are also available by tapping on the DualShock 4 controller’s touchpad.
