Smart features are becoming commonplace in many devices, from lightbulbs to suitcases, so it isn’t too much of a surprise to see that kind of connected technology coming to safety equipment like motorcycle helmets, along with augmented reality (AR) technology, courtesy of Taiwanese start-up firm Jarvish.
The new Jarvish helmet, the X-AR, not only includes the assorted smart and connected features that have been included in previous helmets from the company, but also introduces an AR heads-up display (HUD) to show information on things such as weather condition or traffic.
The helmet is equipped with smartwatch-esque features like call notifications and music controls. To make this even more convenient for riders, voice control support has been integrated, which provides access to smart assistants like Amazon’s Alexa.
The smart assistant support means users can use the in-built microphone and speakers to control features like the 2K HD rear-facing camera, or adjust the HUD, request and control music. The HUD can also be set to display images from the rear-facing camera.
There is 16GB of built-in storage, which can be expanded up to 256GB with memory cards. Bluetooth and Wi-fi connectivity is included, which allows the helmet to pair with iOS or Android phones. The battery will work for roughly four hours from a full charge.
Of course, it is a helmet, so safety is vital, and Jarvish have ensured the X-AR helmet is certified for CE R22.05 (Europe), DOT (US and Canada), CNS 2396, CNS 13438, CNS 13439 (Asia), FCC (electronic radiation safety certifications).
The X-AR helmet is expected to go on sale some time in early 2019, so interested bikers have some time to wait. A price point has not yet been confirmed, but is expected to retail for around $1,000 (USD), but subscribers to the Jarvish newsletter will be able to access a 35% discount.
