The retro-styled virtual reality (VR) title Pixel Ripped 1989 has been long awaited by fans who were drawn to its nostalgia-tinted aesthetic and the various homages to the classic days of videogaming. At last, a release date has been announced, and pre-orders opened in preparation for the release.
Developer ARVORE have announced that Pixel Ripped 1989 will be heading to HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR on 31st July, 2018, with pre-orders now available, along with a pre-order discount for Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR customers.
Pixel Ripped 1989 is described as a ‘game-within-a-game’ set in the era of portable 8-bit consoles. The player will follow the adventures of main character Dot, who sees her world destroyed by a villain called the Cyblin Lord, who has the power to escape from the videogame realm into the real world.
The player takes on the role of a girl called Nicola, who has to help Dot save the videogame realm and the real world from the villainous plans of the Cyblin Lord, all while facing challenges in her own reality in the form of grumpy teachers and an angry headmaster.
Work on Pixel Ripped 1989 first began in 2014, when lead developer Ana Ribeiro first sketched out the ideas for the project that eventually became Pixel Ripped 1989 when she was still a student. Eventually, Ribeiro joined ARVORE and the ideas was developed into the fully-fledged VR world it is today.
If the release of Pixel Ripped 1989 proves successful, there are plans to expand it into a series which will cover other eras of videogaming history.
