Blizzard Entertainment have a big presence at Gamescom 2018, and are promising fans of its many big properties lots of juice new reveals to get them excited. For those lucky enough to be attending Gamescom in person, there is a little something extra, as Blizzard have added an augmented reality (AR) aspect to its Gamescom app.
Visitors to the Blizzard booth at Gamescom can download the Blizzard at Gamescom smartphone app in order to get a special AR-enhanced guided tour around the Blizzard area, but also a chance to win some event-exclusive merchandise.
Activating the app at the booth will reveal some special AR effects over some of Blizzard’s stands and set pieces. One example of this, as captured by Twitter user Pentar0o shows a multitude of Hearthstone cards fluttering like a flock of birds around the huge glowing model hearthstone that Blizzard have set up, with other effects crafted for other games such as Overwatch and World of Warcraft.
Those who participate in the AR guided tour get entered into the Blizzard raffle for a chance to win ‘epic loot’. The app also allows users to check what Blizzard content is available at the event, browse the Gamescom store catalogue and share their custom event calender with friends.
The app is free to download and is available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, with English and German language support.
This isn’t the first time that Blizzard have experimented with AR technology. Players who bought the Diablo III: Reaper of Souls official art book could download the Blizzard AR viewers to bring certain images in the book to life using AR.
Blizzard have several announcements planned for the event, including the reveal of a new World of Warcraft ‘Warbringers’ animated short and new content for Overwatch, so fans have plenty to look forward to.
