Earlier this week at Gamescom 2018, HTC Vive announced that pre-orders for its anticipated HTC Vive Wireless Adapter will soon be open for pre-orders. HTC Vive are now trying to show the possibilities of wireless virtual reality (VR) with a new trailer for the device.
Untethered VR is something that many users are eagerly anticipating, as they will be freed from being tangled or tripped by wires. The new trailer makes a point of highlighting the advantages of wireless VR.
The trailer begins by showing someone running in a sci-fi environment, as they take on robots before transforming to show them wearing a HTC Vive Pro headset, complete with the Vive Wireless Adapter. A sequence follows which shows the user diving for a save in a Football match, and wielding a lightsaber.
The capabilities of the Vive Wireless Adapter are shown, pointing out features such as its long battery life, is extensive range and the capability for multiplayer, something which has been of great interest to proprietors of location-based VR centres.
At the moment, most location-based VR centres which try and over untethered VR rely on backpack-mounted PCs to drive the VR scenarios, but this is not an idea solution for a number of reasons.
The Vive Wireless Adapter uses a PCI-e card in a PC along with a sensor that broadcasts the signal to and from the head-mounted display (HMD). It has a range of six meters, and uses the 60 Ghz band to reduce interference. Intel WiGig specification has been combined with the DisplayLink XR codec for the best performance possible while maintaining a low latency.
Pre-orders are due to open on 5th September, 2018, with a planned release date of 24th September , costing £299 (GBP). The trailer is available to view below.
