Space-Based Real-Time Strategy in VR with MoonStrike

Real-time strategy has seen something of a resurgence in popularity thanks to virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Several titles have taken advantage of the immersive capabilities of VR to offer RTS games, and now developers Big Dorks Entertainment mix in some space combat to bring MoonStrike to VR.

The developers describe MoonStrike as a ‘boiled-down’ RTS, which means much of the excess has been scraped away to offer what the development team consider to be pure RTS experience in VR.

The player takes command of a vast feel of ships in deep space, with the aim of conquering as many planets as possible, as fast as possible. Players will needs to find a planet to land on, secure it and build a base to churn out more ships in order to continue the journey and conquer more planets.

As you would expect, however, the more planets under your control, the more powerful you re,but also more vulnerable, with more points available to attack as you are stretched out across a vast area.

MoonStrike offers cross-platform play for both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, so Steam users who have either VR headset can still play together. Up to three players can engage in competitive multiplayer to see who can conquer the galaxy first.

For those who prefer to play alone, there are several AI settings, so beginners to RTS titles can set it to ‘Basic’ to learn the ropes, while experienced RTS players can hop right in at the Advanced level. There are five different races available to play, each of which has its own characteristics and advantages.

Arenas are themed, but are also procedurally generated, so no two arenas will be exactly alike.

MoonStrike is available on Steam for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, and needs tracked motion controllers in order to play. The title is currently priced at £13.16 (GBP), a 15% launch discount on the usual price of £15.49.

Further information can be found on the Steam Store page. As usual, VRFocus will keep you updated on the latest VR content.
