Earlier this year, Amazon launched a new part of its Amazon Web Services called Amazon Sumerian. The platform was created with the aim of allowing anyone to create rich and full-featured virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences. Now the company is challenging creators to build and publish apps using Amazon Sumerian that fit into a given set of categories for a chance to win a host of prizes.
The challenge involves building an experience using Amazon Sumerian that falls into one of the following categories:
- Education, Training, and Simulations
- Brand Engagement and Retail
- Entertainment, Hospitality and Media
- Other (new product/service, etc)
The judges will also be selecting winners for Best VR, AR and 2D app, as well as best use of a Sumerian Host or Chatbot. There are a large variety of prizes available to win for each category, and in addition the first 100 eligible entries will win $250 (USD) worth of AWS credits.
The main requirement is to create and publish apps using the Amazon Sumerian browser-based IDE that fit into one of the previously mentioned category. To be eligible, creators need to submit a demo video of the application hosted on YouTube, Vimeo or Youku which will feature a step-by-step demonstration of the product.
Creators will also need to fill in a submission form, which will include a description of the app along with specific use case, value proposition, category of submission, designated device and any operational instructions. The URL for the published application must also be included for evaluation.
Participants in this hackathon challenge will be given access to tutorial and training materials for building immersive apps in Amazon Sumerian, along with support from the Amazon Sumerian Slack community, Twitch and webinars.
Further information on how to enter, along with details on the prizes available can be found on the Amazon Sumerian website. For future coverage of amazon Sumerian and other VR and AR services, keep checking back with VRFocus.
