Make Real and its sister company Tammeka Games have been involved with virtual reality (VR) for quite a number of years now, with the latter’s first commercial project being Radial-G: Racing Revolved. This has been followed up by several other VR additions including the latest which has arrived today, Vodafone – Working at Height.
Firstly, lets start way back in 2014, a whole two years before the Oculus Rift CV1 (as it used to be called) was released, in the days of the first development kits. Newly formed Tammeka Games released the first details of what would be a very fast racing title, going on to launch a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign and then an early access version called Radial-G: Racing Revolved.
The project was a bold move in the early days of VR, offering high-speed sci-fi racing around a tubular track. It was videogames like this that helped developers learn what players could and couldn’t handle in VR, with the cockpit design helping to ground players in the virtual environments.
Tammeka Games went onto officially launch Radial-G: Racing Revolved the same day as the consumer Oculus Rift in March 2016, followed by HTC Vive and PlayStation VR further down the line. Noting the growing popularity of mobile VR, the studio built a version for Samsung Gear VR, Radial-G: Infinity X, turning the title into an infinity runner instead.
While Tammeka Games has gone quiet Make Real is still very much in the VR development business. It was approached by Immersive VR Education to help port the company’s highly popular Apollo 11 VR Experience from Oculus Rift onto mobile platforms Gear VR and Google Daydream.
Yet it wasn’t until early 2017 that Make Real finally launched its own VR project to the masses, a fun filled multiplayer party title called Loco Dojo. Wonderfully zany and rife with British humour, Make Real managed to secure the vocal stylings of Brian Blessed to be the main character, as players competed in a series of mini-games to earn enough points and enter the dojo found in the middle of the map.
Most recently Make Real will be releasing a new app for Oculus Go and Gear VR called Vodafone – Working at Height. Working with the telecommunications company the studio will be addressing what it’s like to work as an engineer, scaling up towers to keep its mobile network operational.
