It’s the time of the year Oculus fans always look forward to, when the company puts on a virtual reality (VR) display for the whole world. If you’ve been looking forward to Space Bullet Dynamics Corporation’s upcoming mech fighter VOX Machinae then today’s the day, with Oculus announcing the launch.
Promising to offer the ‘ultimate giant robot combat action-simulator for both VR and standard screens’, VOX Machinae puts you in charge of enormous walking robots called GDRs or “Grinders”, bristling with weaponry. You choose a chassis then customize it with a selection of powerful weapons including lasers, missiles, cannons and more to take down enemies.
Featuring support for not only Oculus Rift but HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality via Steam, VOX Machinae features both offline and online gameplay, with up to 16 players able to take to the battlefield at once. There’s even cross-play support between VR and non-VR players.
The multiplayer modes include a selection of objectives, all of which can be played with 2-4 teams. There’s Stockpile Mode for example, there teams have to control factories dotted around the environment and reap their production rewards. Or how about Salvage Mode where you have to recover and protect the monolithic Decker machine.
And just to make sure you’re not having to wait for other players VOX Machinae features bots to fill in those gaps, either online or off.
To add to the immersive feel of the cockpit Space Bullet has ensured it’s as interactive as possible, offering touch screens, grabbable sticks and even an ignition key to make controlling these hulking war machines seem like the real deal.
VOX Machinae is out now for compatible head-mounted displays (HMDs), retailing for $24.99 USD via the usual sales outlets. As Oculus Connect 5 continues, keep reading VRFocus for the latest news and updates from the event.
