Mozilla Announce Release of Firefox Reality

Earlier this year, Mozilla, the developers behind popular web browser Firefox announced that it was working on a new version of Firefox that was designed specifically for use in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headsets. The company has now announced that its work has come to fruition and Firefox Reality is now available on Viveport, Oculus Store and Daydream app store.

The aim of Firefox Reality was to deliver 3D web and immersive content to VR headset users whilst maintaining the ease of use, choice, control and privacy that users of Firefox tend to expect and letting users move seamlessly between immersive and 2D web content.

Andre Vrignaud, Head of Mixed Reality Platform Strategy at Mozilla said: “We spent a lot of time talking to early VR headset owners. We asked questions like: “What is missing?” “Do you love your device?” And “If not, why?” The feedback we heard the most was that users were having a hard time finding new games and experiences. This is why we built a feed of amazing content into the home screen of Firefox Reality.”

Firefox Reality is using the same Quantum engine that the latest version of desktop Firefox is using, which has been praised by users and critics for its speed and performance. Mozilla is also noted for its commitment to the safety and privacy of its users and have affirmed that the same features that ensure privacy and transparency in desktop Firefox will be incorporated into Firefox Reality.

The company says that this release for version 1.0 of Firefox Reality does have some features missing, but note that version 1.1 is ‘just around the corner’ where several bug fixes and new features will be included, such as support for bookmarks, 360-degree videos, accounts and more.
